“Smriti Irani Supports Prime Minister’s Choice on Citizenship Law Despite Protests”
The remarks come a day after Mamata Banerjee alleged that anyone applying for citizenship under CAA would be labeled as an “illegal migrant”.
In Bardhaman, Union Minister Smriti Irani supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) despite protests. She claimed that it’s the right move, as it grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Irani accused Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to provoke certain communities for political gain.
Banerjee, on the other hand, criticized the CAA, calling it an election ploy and expressing doubts about its legality. She warned that those applying for citizenship under the CAA could be labeled as “illegal migrants,” linking it to the controversial National Register of Citizens (NRC) process.
“If even one person gets it right, I will be happy. I will provide protection to everyone. Do you know how many churches have been burnt in Manipur? Where were the BJP leaders when women were paraded naked in Manipur? Be honest, didn’t you have Aadhaar cards? Do you own the land and shops ? The moment you apply for CAA is , you become illegal,” she said.
On March 11, the Union Home Ministry announced the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), just days before the Lok Sabha election schedule was announced.
The CAA rules, introduced by the Narendra Modi government and approved by Parliament in 2019, aim to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants – Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians – who fled Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

नरेंद्र मोदी सरकार द्वारा पेश किए गए और 2019 में संसद द्वारा अनुमोदित सीएए नियमों का उद्देश्य बांग्लादेश, पाकिस्तान और अफगानिस्तान से भागे प्रताड़ित गैर-मुस्लिम प्रवासियों – हिंदू, सिख, जैन, बौद्ध, पारसी और ईसाई – को भारतीय नागरिकता प्रदान करना है। और 31 दिसंबर 2014 से पहले भारत आ गए।
